Play 16, Day 16 – HOMOCIDE COMES TO BURNHAM WOOD

SUITED and UNIFORMED pace the site of a house fire and double murder in the ironically named California suburb of Burnham Wood. The house fire we know because they cover their noses and mouths with handkerchiefs. Perhaps some suggestive soot would help.

                                                            SUITED:

How old is the girl?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Sixteen last December.

                                                            SUITED:

This guy?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Just turned 40. Family friend. Thought of him as an uncle. Folks did, anyway.

                                                            SUITED:

The mother?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

She and her husband.

                                                            SUITED:

Married.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Separated. He’s at the station, now. Says inappropriate focus on the daughter

                                                            SUITED:

How long they been separated?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Almost exactly a year.

                                                            SUITED:

Ages?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

She, 44. Him, 52.

                                                            SUITED kicks at the dust.

                                                            SUITED:

The woman’s some kind of artist?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

We don’t have that.

                                                            SUITED:

Those are chisels.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

It’s his house.

                                                            SUITED:

Only tools I found. She live here?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

No, this is his alone. The Suspect.

                                                            SUITED:

“Person of Interest,” if you get jumped by the media. There’s still too much we don’t know.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

I understand. Thanks.

                                                            SUITED:

What’s she doing here?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

You mean—

                                                            SUITED:

Why didn’t he kill her at her house?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Opportunity?

                                                            SUITED:

The boy is hers.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

The child. Probably. No ID yet. It was the most badly— the fire got       pretty hot.

                                                            SUITED:

Yeah. How old is the boy?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Eight.

                                                            SUITED:

And the Baby John Doe?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Not inconsistent with. They’re a little confused. This one is on the small side…

                                                            SUITED:

I found what looked like a leg brace.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

…and there was originally an Ambert Alert for both the girl and the boy.

                                                            SUITED:

Yeah? Anything on that?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Oregon border. No boy.

                                                            SUITED:

Where’s he running?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

I have no idea. I’m sure he doesn’t.

                                                            SUITED:

They got security video?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

On its way from the rest-stop.

                                                            SUITED:

Any word?

                                                            UNIFORMED:

He got the key to the restroom, and he was still in the lobby when the girl come out. She had interactions with a couple of people. An elderly couple and another girl her age.

                                                            SUITED:

He was never more than 50 feet away from her. Studies show.

                                                            (SUITED crosses the stage)

                                                            UNIFORMED:

She could have been scarred.

                                                            SUITED:

She’d have had to have been.

(SUITED picks at a spot on the ground)

Oregon. Headed for the wilderness. They’ll be easily identified. The only ones camping in a National Park that brought all-new gear, and not enough of it. When the Feds find them, they’ll land a SWAT team and surround the brand-new tent. Then they’ll wait until she’s away from him for a minute. Toilet, good chance. And they’ll riddle that tent with bullets. Or else move in when she’s there, and take him out quick.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Either way, he’s got no story to tell.

The two of them are silent a moment.

                                                            SUITED:

Burning a house to the ground can’t eradicate evidence that a horrific crime has been perpetrated here.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Yeah. That’s true.

                                                            SUITED:

But we’ll never know what this crime was fundamentally about. You know? Never, never understand it.

                                                            UNIFORMED:

Naw. You’re right.

                                                            BLACKOUT. END OF PLAY.
